Comprehensive Statistical Report on the Human Rights Situation in the First Half of 2024 in Iranian Kurdistan

According to the Hana Human Rights Organization, the statistical center of the Hana Human Rights Organization has prepared a statistical report on the human rights situation and the violation of fundamental rights of Kurdish citizens in the first half of 2024 in Iranian Kurdistan. This report includes the provinces of Kurdistan, West Azerbaijan, Kermanshah, and Ilam. It is important to note that due to the lack of free access to news and events inside the country, these statistics may not cover all cases of citizens' rights violations. However, all efforts have been made by Hana Human Rights Organization colleagues inside the country to ensure the accuracy and verification of the reported cases.


Based on the data recorded at the Hana Human Rights Organization's statistical center, in the first half of 2024, more than 382 Kurdish citizens were arrested. At least 19 women were among the detainees. 61 prisoners were sentenced to a total of 200 years in prison and 188 lashes. During this period, at least 57 people were executed, 271 Kurdish Kolbars (border porters) and tradesmen were killed or injured, at least 20 workers died in work-related accidents, 8 people were killed or injured by landmine explosions, at least 7 women were killed for honor-related reasons, 81 citizens committed suicide, and finally, 2 prisoners died due to torture, and one political activist was assassinated in Sulaymaniyah.

Arrests:
In the first half of 2024, more than 382 Kurdish citizens were arbitrarily arrested by the security agencies of the Islamic Republic of Iran without any detention warrants issued by the court. The identities of all the detainees have been verified by the Hana Human Rights Organization, with most being arrested for political activities, collaboration with Kurdish opposition parties, labor activism, civil activities, women’s rights advocacy, and environmental activism. According to this data, among the detainees, 19 are women. Additionally, 18 Kolbars, 9 individuals including 5 Kurdish clerics for religious activities, and 3 environmental activists are among the detainees.

In the past six months, 4 Kurdish citizens died under torture during detention. They are Mehran Akrami from Takab, Peyman Abdi from Kermanshah, Shahin Galedari from Orumieh, and Barzin Hamzehzadeh from Sardasht.

6 political prisoners were sentenced to death on charges of "corruption on earth." The names of these prisoners are: Shahin Vasaf from Salmas, Yousef Ahmadi from Baneh, Mohammad Khezrnejad, Mohammad Faraji, Kamran Soltani, and Raouf Sheikh Maroofi from Bukan.

61 prisoners were sentenced to a total of 200 years in prison and 188 lashes in the past six months. During this period, 8 cases of hunger strike by prisoners were reported. A prisoner named Kianoush Valdbeigi from Paveh died in prison due to illness.


Executions

According to Hana's statistics, in the first 6 months of 2024, at least 57 Kurdish citizens have been executed in Iranian prisons. The names and details of all these citizens have been confirmed and recorded by Hana. The details of the crimes alleged by the Islamic Republic of Iran are as follows:

- Executions due to drug-related crimes: 32 people
- Executions due to premeditated murder: 13 people
- Executions due to Moharebeh (enmity against God) and political crimes: 7 people
- Executions due to armed robbery: 5 people
- Killed under torture by prison officials: 2 people

In the first 6 months of 2024, a total of 7 political prisoners were executed. Mohsen Mazlom, Vafa Azarbar, Mohammad Faramerzi, and Pejman Fatehi, members of the Komala Party of Iranian Kurdistan, were executed for political activities. Khosro Basharat, Farhad Salimi, and Anwar Khazri were executed for religious activities.


Kolbars:

According to Hana's statistics, in the first 6 months of 2024, a total of 271 Kurdish kolbars and traders have been killed, injured, or detained. All the victims and injured are male.

According to this data, of the 271 kolbars:
- 35 were killed,
- 218 were injured,
- 18 were detained.

Further details are as follows:

- Of the 35 kolbars who were killed, 26 were shot directly by the border forces of the Islamic Republic and lost their lives. Seven kolbars died due to natural accidents, and two kolbars were killed in car accidents resulting from a chase by armed forces of the Islamic Republic.

- In the first 6 months of 2024, 218 kolbars were injured. Of these, 179 were injured by gunfire from the border forces of the Islamic Republic, 13 were injured due to natural accidents, 13 were injured due to beatings by armed forces of the Islamic Republic, 9 were injured in car accidents following a chase, and 4 were injured due to landmine explosions.

- In the past six months, 18 kolbars were also detained by the border forces of the Islamic Republic.

It should be noted that the names of all the kolbars mentioned in this report have been registered at the Hana Human Rights Organization. The highest number of casualties (both killed and injured) in the past year are related to the towns and villages listed below:

Women

In the past 6 months, 19 women have been detained, with their identities verified by Hana. The detainees were mostly arrested for civil activities related to the Jina revolution, political activities, cooperation with Kurdish opposition parties to the Islamic Republic, and labor activism. Six of the detained women have been sentenced to a total of 47 years in prison. Additionally, one woman has been sentenced to 74 lashes. Unfortunately, in the first 6 months of 2024, 7 women were murdered by their own families—fathers, brothers, and husbands—due to honor-related reasons and family disputes.

Suicides

According to the statistics recorded at Hana's center, at least 81 people have committed suicide in the cities and villages of Kurdistan in the past month. The names and details of all these individuals have been verified and registered by Hana. Of those who committed suicide, 49 were men and 32 were women. During this period, a child also committed suicide, as well as a soldier in his barracks. A citizen from Sanandaj, who had a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Art, committed suicide following his expulsion from the university. Most suicides occurred due to family issues, poverty, and in some cases, for unknown reasons.

Social Abnormalities

In the first 6 months of 2024, at least 7 women were murdered in the Kurdish provinces due to honor-related reasons. Unfortunately, gender-based violence continues throughout Iran, especially in Kurdistan.

Landmine Explosions

According to statistics recorded at Hana's center, in the first 6 months of 2024, at least 8 citizens in the border areas of Kurdistan were killed or injured by landmines and unexploded ordnance left over from the Iran-Iraq war and planted by the border forces of the Islamic Republic. Of these, 4 people lost their lives and 4 others were injured, with one of the injured suffering a permanent disability. Most victims of these landmines have been kolbars, traders, and Kurdish farmers.

Workers

According to statistics recorded at Hana's center, at least 20 workers in Kurdistan have lost their lives due to workplace accidents and lack of safety measures. Many others have been injured. Additionally, during this period, 3 labor activists were detained for their labor and union activities.

Environmental Activists

In the past 6 months, at least 3 environmental activists have been detained.

Clerics and Religious Activists

In the first 6 months of 2024, at least 9 clerics and religious activists were detained. One cleric named Mohammad Khodrnejad from Bukan was sentenced to 16 years in prison and execution, while another cleric was sentenced to 7 years in prison.
