Human Rights Situation Report for August 2024 in Iranian Kurdistan
10:10 - 6/9/2024
The Statistics Center of the Hana Human Rights Organization has prepared a statistical report on the human rights situation and the violation of the fundamental rights of Kurdish citizens in Iranian Kurdistan during August 2024. It should be noted that due to the severe censorship and repression in the country, free access to news is not possible, so this data may not cover all human rights violations. However, all efforts have been made by Hana's team to ensure the accuracy and verification of the reported cases.
According to the statistics recorded at the Statistics Center of the Hana Human Rights Organization, at least 46 Kurdish citizens were arrested in August 2024, 8 prisoners were sentenced to a total of 292 months in prison, 15 *kolbars* (border porters) and tradespeople were killed or injured, at least 8 workers lost their lives in workplace accidents, 11 people committed suicide, and one woman was a victim of patriarchal violence and was murdered.
**Arrests:**
In August 2024, at least 46 Kurdish citizens were arbitrarily summoned and arrested by security forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran without any official arrest warrants from the court. The identities of these 46 individuals have been confirmed by the Hana Human Rights Organization, with most of them arrested for political activities, collaboration with Kurdish opposition parties, civil activities, religious activities, and 9 for environmental activism. According to the data, 36 of the detainees are men and 10 are women.
**Executions:**
In August 2024, at least 12 Kurdish citizens were executed in Iranian prisons. Among those executed was Reza Rasaei, a Kurdish citizen and follower of the Yarsan faith, who was executed for the murder of an IRGC officer. Five individuals were executed for intentional murder, and six were executed for drug-related offenses.
**Prison Sentences:**
In August, 8 prisoners were sentenced to a total of 292 months in prison and were arrested to serve their sentences. The harshest sentence was for Mashaallah Karami, the father of Mohammad Mehdi Karami, from Bijar, who was executed on January 7, 2023, for allegedly killing a Basij member during the nationwide protests. Mashaallah Karami was sentenced by a court in Karaj to 8 years and 10 months in prison, a fine of 1.9 billion tomans, and the confiscation of his assets. Hikmat Amiri from Dehgolan was sentenced to 42 months, Matin Hasani from Bukan to 31 months, and a cleric named Saber Khodamoradi from Saqqez to 15 months in prison.
**Kolbars and Tradespeople:**
According to Hana's statistics, in August 2024, at least 15 *kolbars* and tradespeople were killed or injured. Of this number, 4 were killed: three *kolbars*, Esad Espandar, Ali Rasouli, and Esad Afranjeh, were killed by direct fire from government forces, and Naser Osmani died after falling from a height. Additionally, at least 11 *kolbars* were injured, all of them due to direct gunfire from government forces.
**Suicides:**
In August 2024, at least 11 people in the cities and villages of Kurdistan committed suicide. Among the suicide cases, 4 were women and 7 were men. One of the individuals was a child under 18 years old. The suicides were mostly due to family problems, poverty, and some for unknown reasons. The increasing suicide rate, especially in recent months, is a worrying trend.
**Workers:**
In August 2024, at least 8 workers lost their lives in workplace accidents. The lack of safety measures for workers and employer negligence are among the causes of these deaths during work.
**Environment:**
In August, 9 environmental activists, including one woman, were arrested.
**Social Abnormalities:**
In August 2024, a 17-year-old girl named "Mobina Zini Vand" from the village of "Garzelangar" in Darreh Shahr, Ilam, was killed by her father using a firearm.
**Conclusion:**
In August, executions continued, along with arbitrary arrests, unfair prison sentences, and inhumane death penalties. Additionally, the killing and injuring of *kolbars* and tradespeople by the armed forces of the Islamic Republic, as well as the high suicide rates, particularly among youth and children, are among the numerous problems faced by the people of Kurdistan's cities and villages. The discriminatory policies of the Islamic Republic towards Kurds, the lack of economic development in Kurdistan provinces, and the lack of investment in these regions have created conditions where some people are forced to turn to the dangerous occupation of *kolbari* (border porting), the fatal outcomes of which are seen in the daily killings of *kolbars*.
