Mostafa Hamdi, Kurdish Civil Activist, Sentenced to the Inhumane Punishment of Flogging

According to the Hana Human Rights Organization, Mostafa Hamdi, a civil and media activist residing in Saqqez, has been sentenced by Branch 105 of the Criminal Court Two of this city to 10 months of imprisonment and 70 lashes. He was charged with “disrupting public order, peace, and tranquility by participating in illegal gatherings and ceremonies.”

Mostafa Hamdi, 47 years old, married, and father of two, was informed of the initial verdict on October 12, 2024. He has 20 days within the legal timeframe to appeal the sentence.

According to available information, this Kurdish media activist and the manager of the Saqqez-based channel “Porseman” was arrested without a court warrant by security forces on April 7, 2024, at Milad Hall in Saqqez. He was transferred to the Intelligence Office detention center in Sanandaj without his family being informed. After spending one month in detention, he was released on bail of 400 million tomans on Saturday, May 11, 2024.

Hana emphasizes that during his detention and interrogation, Mr. Hamdi was denied access to legal counsel, even though this right is guaranteed by the Islamic Republic’s Criminal Procedure Code.

Previously, in August 2021, this civil activist was sentenced to 24 months of imprisonment by the Revolutionary Court of Saqqez on charges of “propaganda against the regime and insulting the founder and leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran by publishing content and images on social media.”

Despite international legal obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which prohibits degrading and inhumane punishments, the Islamic Republic of Iran continues to use flogging as a form of punishment.
