Maysoon Majidi, Kurdish Human Rights Activist, Released from Italian Prison

Colleagues from the Hana Human Rights Organization in Italy reported the release of "Maysoon Majidi," a political and civil activist from Sanandaj and a member of this organization.
According to the report, on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, Maysoon Majidi was freed after 10 months of unjust detention. The Crotone court, following a lengthy hearing, acquitted this Kurdish human rights activist of all the charges brought against her.
As a result, all precautionary measures against Majidi were suspended, and she was released by the judge’s order.
Maysoon Majidi had left the Kurdistan Region late last year with her brother, fleeing repeated threats from agents of the Islamic Republic. After arriving on the shores of Roccella Ionica in December, she was arrested by Italian police, accused of “assisting the captain of a boat carrying refugees.” From the outset, she had strongly rejected this accusation, deeming it a fabricated scenario.
In response to the uncertainty surrounding her case, Majidi went on a three-day hunger strike starting on Monday, May 27, 2024.
It is worth mentioning that, from the moment these false charges were raised against Maysoon Majidi, a significant number of human rights organizations, activists, women's organizations in Italy, members of the Italian parliament, civil activists, Italian politicians, and volunteer lawyers called for her immediate acquittal and release.
As the Hana Human Rights Organization, we express our gratitude to all those who worked to prove her innocence. We would like to emphasize that, despite the baseless charges, we always believed in the independence of the Italian judicial system and were confident that a fair decision regarding Maysoon Majidi would be made. Ultimately, through the tireless efforts of Mr. Giancarlo Liberati, who took on Maysoon Majidi’s case in this critical situation, and her effective defense, justice for Maysoon Majidi was achieved.
