Comprehensive Report on Suicides in June 2024 in Kurdistan Provinces
07:56 - 25/6/2024
According to reports from the Hana Human Rights Organization, at least 23 Kurdish citizens from various cities and villages in the Kurdistan provinces committed suicide in June 2024. This concerning statistic includes 9 women and 14 men, with the youngest being 13 years old and the oldest 45 years old.
This tragic phenomenon indicates serious underlying issues in society, including the lack of basic living facilities, economic, social, and cultural pressures, and the absence of psychological and physical security. These factors have collectively created conditions that drive individuals to desperate actions such as suicide.
Possible Reasons:
Economic Pressures:
Unemployment and financial problems are recognized as one of the main factors driving suicide in this region. The lack of job opportunities and the resulting financial instability create a sense of hopelessness among the residents.
Family and Social Issues:
Family disputes, divorces, and other social issues have played a significant role in these suicides. The breakdown of familial relationships and the lack of a supportive social network can lead individuals to feel isolated and without options.
Lack of Psychological Support:
The absence of counseling and psychotherapy services in the Kurdistan regions means that individuals facing mental health crises have no professional help to turn to. This lack of support exacerbates their struggles and may lead them to view suicide as the only escape.
Cultural and Social Pressures:
Cultural and social expectations, especially on women, are another significant factor. The pressures to conform to societal norms and the stigma attached to seeking help for mental health issues contribute to the sense of entrapment and hopelessness.
Conclusion:
These statistics highlight the urgent need for attention and serious action in the economic, social, and healthcare sectors in the Kurdistan provinces. The government and non-governmental organizations must implement support programs and counseling services to improve living conditions and prevent such tragic incidents. Comprehensive measures are necessary to address the root causes and provide the residents with the resources and support they need to cope with their challenges and improve their overall quality of life.
