On Wednesday, May 10, 2023, Václav Bálek, the President of the United Nations Human Rights Council, announced in a letter to the members of the Council that "Ali Bahraini", the ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations, will be the chairman of the session of the "Social Assembly of the Human Rights Council" which It will be held on the second and third of November 2023.
The Social Assembly of the United Nations Human Rights Council is held every year with the presence of members of the United Nations, non-governmental organizations and international institutions. The theme of this year's meeting of this forum is "Scientific, technological and innovation participation in the promotion of human rights". The expulsion of the Islamic Republic from the United Nations Commission on Women, which on December 23rd, the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations issued resolutions due to the systematic suppression of women in Iran during the nationwide uprising, and this contradictory appointment can be an example of the organization's hypocritical action. The nations knew that the credibility of this forum and the entire human rights system of the United Nations is being questioned.

For many years, Iranian authorities have used scientific technology to monitor and censor the Iranian people, including limiting access to information and the exchange of ideas on and off the Internet.
Mr. Bahraini was appointed as the representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the United Nations in September 2022, at a time when the bloody and deadly repression of the Zhina revolution was going on throughout Iran.
In this meeting, there is going to be a discussion about "scientific participation, technology and innovation in the promotion of human rights", while in Iran, scientific technology is used to suppress, censor and prevent the publication of news related to human rights through internet filtering and platforms. Information and social media are used.
The appointment of Ali Bahraini is a gross insult to the victims who, during the Islamic Republic and especially during the recent nationwide uprising, had their fundamental rights violated, were tortured and detained, lost their eyes and, most importantly, had their lives taken.
Due to this fact, we, as human rights organizations with a field of activity in Kurdistan, demand that this decision be immediately cancelled and Mr. Ali Bahraini removed from the presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council's Social Assembly.
